I Call You Friends

In John 15, Jesus says, “I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.”

This passage takes place on Jesus’ last night, as teaching for the disciples after the last supper. How does that affect the way you hear this verse? How do you imagine Jesus’ affect and tone of voice in this?

I wonder how this passage sounded to John’s community 2000 years ago. What does it mean that Jesus regards you as friends? Is there a part of worship where you feel this message?

What does friendship mean to you? How do you experience God’s presence through friends?

People of St. Timothy, your friendships are holy spaces where God’s Spirit moves and flows. Give thanks for a friend this week, and let them know how important the friendship is to you.
