Daisies and Tears

Written by St. Timothy

Something is changing in me. I feel a lump in my throat and tears come to my eyes more quickly these days.  What triggers those tears?

News of the birth of a bouncing baby boy in the neighborhood,

– A phone call from a brother,

– The evening news,

– A colorful sunset,

– Hearing about someone on the block who has leukemia,

– People offering to share their stash of hand sanitizer with us,

– Listening to a neighbor talk about her anxiety,

– Children leaving their artwork in our mailbox,

– And daisies.

Daisies always bring a smile to my face, but two years ago my mom died and daisies were her favorite flower.  Now, along with a smile, daisies put a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.

Frederick Buechner reminded me to pay attention to those tears: “Whenever you find tears in your eyes, especially unexpected tears, it is well to pay the closest attention. They are not only telling you something about the secret of who you are, but more often than not, God is speaking to you through them.”

God is not done speaking… so I will keep pondering. And these days, it will be with tears in my eyes.
